INTRODUCTION
The Healthy Lifestyle I-Quest is designed with the concept that children will work together in pairs to explore and grasp a solid the idea of healthy lifestyle habits and the main influences surrounding these. When considering such, children will be expected to create and develop a resource kit and campaign ideas which will be directed at their school community. Children will develop and create materials which will be part of their resource kit. These resources should be both informational and promotional. They are also expected to consider how to organise whole school events promoting health lifestyle habit ideas.
It is the intent of this I-Quest that it be directed towards children currently working towards the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) Level 4. This will assumingly be Grade 5 and 6 students, however there is likely to be a very wide range of students within each class. The great thing about this I-Quest is that the activities are rather opened ended- there is generally no 'right' or 'wrong' answers. Instead students will be able to explore each topic in the depth that they are ready for and challenge themselves appropriately. As this has been introduced as a competition, it is likely to give the students the motivation that they need to produce their best work. We would anticipate that the Healthy Lifestyle I-Quest would be studied over approximately 1 term (10 weeks). However, depending upon the time you have and the depth you would like your students to undertake the tasks in, you may need to stretch it out a bit or even assign it as homework.
VELS DOMAINS, DIMENSIONS AND STANDARDS

INQUIRY LEARNING
As the name may have given away, the Healthy Lifestyle I-Quest has been developed based upon inquiry learning. This involves the children taking responsibility for a higher portion of their
learning than they would normally do. The students are constantly encouraged to ask new questions once connecting newly acquired information. Although they may reach an end point of 'knowledge acquisition' and presentation within their activity, the information learnt through this unit will be something that they will continue to build upon for years. Their opinions will also likely change, and therefore the questioning and wondering will be cyclic over a longer period of time- we are merely setting a foundation for the majority of students working at VELS Level 4.
This form of inquiry learning is based largely upon the Carol Kuhlthau's – Information Search
Process (ISP).

WHY CHOOSE TO FOCUS ON A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE?
We have chosen the healthy lifestyle topic for a variety of reasons. It's ability to integrate learning across a range of domains is a key strength, as most teachers will understand the pressure of tackling the 'crowded curriculum'. Healthy lifestyle choices affect everyone every day, therefore it is engaging for students as they can relate their learning back to their own prior experience and develop self-reflection skills. It is also for this reason that it suits the inquiry learning style perfectly, as students are more likely to have a thirst for knowledge, in comparison to other curriculum areas that are often perceived to be a bit more 'dry'.
Most of all, it is a topic that is essential for students health and well being. Being healthy is the most important thing, and the best way to set healthy individuals up for life is by educating and implementing good habits when they are young. This can be further enhanced that by a school actually running a student led and developed health campaign, they can save themselves time and money developing a campaign and instead put time and money into how the campaign will actually run (eg. Spending money on fulfilling the students' wishlists etc.).
ASSESSMENT
Self/Peer Assessment
Throughout the I-Quest, we have included checklists where appropriate at the conclusion of activities. We strongly recommend that you encourage your students to use these as both self assessment and peer assessment (with another group). These are basic, easy to follow and ensure that students have included all of the necessary information appropriate to that particular resource.
Teacher Assessment
Of course teachers, any good rich task involves assessment on your part. We understand that this is a very large, broad unit of work and that you may choose to explore some modules in more detail than others, dependant upon your term/year plan. To accomodate this need, we have included a general rubric for you to assess your students using. It is assumed that you will assess the resource kit as an overall package, yet also focus specifically on a few modules.
Some tasks we highly recommend spending a decent amount of classtime working on, including assessment are:
Logo and slogan
Students will undertake the entire design process, and must also be appropriate for the target audience
Swap 'n' snack
This is a good overall grasp of the 'healthy eating' concept- if they understand this activity then they probably understand the rest of the healthy eating activities as well.
Active transport event planning
Encouraging students to walk/ride their bike to school by exposure to the activity. The longer they spend doing the activity the more likely they are to 'get the message'.
Self-image/friendship
You are able to assess their core friendship values and morals surrounding themelves and others
Slip slop slap
A great campaign to model the students, with many layers of detail available. Teaching kids to be sun smart is also part of general school policy (ie. no hat, no play)
Wishlist
This is a practical application of essentially all that the students had so far learnt by doing this.
It would also be expected that you are keeping a close eye on students in class to ensure they are participating fully in 'non' assessed activities, as well as ensuring they are adhering to safe, and ethical internet browsing rules.
