nutrients
Nutrients are the building blocks of our food. All food contains nutrients in some way, shape or form. Nutrients can be divided into 2 subgroups:
Macronutrients and Micronutrients.
Macronutrients and Micronutrients.
MACRONUTRIENTS
Macro means 'large'- this makes it easy for us to remember that our body needs a larger amount of these nutrients. The four macronutrients are protein, carbohydrates, fat and water. There are a variety of foods that contain each of the macro-nutrients, with some sources being a larger supplier than others.
Protein.
Main dietary sources include fish/seafood, meat, chicken, soy, tofu, legumes eggs and dairy foods.
Carbohydrates.
Main dietary sources include grains, cereal, bread, pasta and rice.
Fat.
Main dietary sources include butter, margarine and oil. Foods that contain 'good'
fats (these are better for your body) can be found in fish, nuts, avocado, peanut butter and olive oil.
Water.
Obviously the greatest source of water for your body is to drink water, however some degree of
water is found in all food and drinks.

MICRONUTRIENTS
Micro on the other hand means 'small'- our bodies need far less micro-nutrients to keep healthy. Micro-nutrients include all Vitamins and Minerals- there are a lot of them!
Vitamins and Minerals allow our bodies to work properly. They help our bodies fight off illness, make us grow and help our body's organs, blood, bones and muscles to function well.
Some people need more micronutrients than others. People are likely to need more micronutrients if they are pregnant, breastfeeding or unwell. For those who cannot get enough in their food, micronutrients are also available in tablets, otherwise known as 'supplements'.

There are many different types of Vitamins and Minerals. Surf the web on Google- see what you can learn about the ones in the picture to the left.
RESOURCE KIT ACTIVITY
Your job is to create a fact sheet that provides information about one macronutrient of your choice, and another fact sheet that provides information on one micronutrient of your choice. You must create a separate fact sheet for your macro-nutrient and a separate fact sheet for your micro-nutrient.
A fact sheet provides the key information necessary for the reader to understand your topic. Often fact sheets use dot points, or smaller paragraphs only.

Checklist
You must include the following information
1.Title (What is the nutrient you are making your fact sheet about?)
2.What does it help your body do? For example, it may help your muscles grow
and repair (protein), or help your bones and teeth stay strong (calcium).
3. What happens if you do not get enough of this
nutrient? Will the person get sick, or show any other symptoms of being unwell?
4.Where can you find this nutrient?
List it's main food sources as well as any other source that your body can get this nutrient from. For example, the main source of Vitamin D that people get comes from the sun.
5. Include a recipe that is a good source of your nutrient. For example, a recipe for a banana
smoothie will contain calcium as one of the main ingredients is milk.
