SWAP 'N' SNACk
How healthy are your usual snacks that you consume at school?
Think about the types and amounts of nutrients they contain (or don't contain).
Health experts have been researching what children eat whilst they are at school. What kids eat at school is very important, as kids spend so much time there!
One experiment found that Australian primary school aged children are eating on average three processed/packaged snack foods at school each day.
To maintain good health, some foods should be eaten in larger amounts than others. Some foods we should eat lots of (GO foods), some foods should eat in moderation (SLOW foods) and some foods we should only eat rarely (WHOA foods).
Refine your food knowledge by playing the game 'Food Fury' (GO, SLOW, WHOA).

RESOURCE KIT ACTIVITY: SNACK 'N' SWAP POSTER
Some of the most common food and drinks consumed by students at school are listed below. Please note this list contains both ‘healthier’ and ‘unhealthier’ options.
Your principal needs you to select 5 'unhealthier' options from the list (or think of your own unhealthy snacks)
For each of these, find a healthier alternative for each snack.
The alternatives need to be somewhat similar to the original choice, however they should promote better health to the consumer. Write a sentence to explain why you made this choice.
Example:
Chocolate cake bought from shop----------> Healthy home made banana muffin
Banana muffins contain fruit, a healthy snack, while chocolate cake does not. By cooking muffins at home, you have control of what type and amount of ingredients are in your food. If I cooked banana muffins at home, I would use natural honey as a sweetener instead of white, processed sugar.

Don't forget to present your snack swaps on a fun, eye-catching poster, as it will later be placed throughout your school for all students to read. You may do this either on paper or on the computer. Either way, be sure to use colour, headings and surf the web for some cool pictures.
